Gryffindor wanted to teach the 'Bravest' and for sheer cold
courage Severus Snape has few equals in the Wizarding or any other
world, (in fact I'd say only Harry could offer him any real
competition).
Each book has seen him risk his life to defend the good or on
behalf of a trio of students he heartily detests. And now he's spying
on Voldemort on behalf of the Order, a horrifyingly risky undertaking
as both he and Dumbledore know only too well.
Yet curiously enough few except Dumbledore seem to give Snape the
credit he deserves. Seemingly his unpleasant manners and sharp tongue
blind almost everybody else to his better qualities, which are
admittedly well hidden!
