I actually also feel that it was a stunning spell of some such and that falling through the veil actually killed him. What I was mainly trying to establish is the fact that we don't actually know because we are told neither the spell incantation OR the colour, it is just presumed it was red because that was the colour of the previous spell that SB ducked. Also as someone else pointed out, there are a distinct lack of AKs flying around the room, they only seem to start when Lord Thingy gets there. I don't think the spell was necessarily silent just because JK didn't tell us what it was though, she just didn't mention it. Like I said, I just get the feeling there is something there that she is deliberately not telling us for some reason or she's an exceptionally cruel woman, to not even properly explain how Sirius died.

Two further questions I want to add.

Other than the Sirius fans themselves, is there anyone out there who actually got upset because Sirius died and NOT because of Harry's reaction to it? I'm still struggling through posts from Monday but so far, most of the posts I've seen seem to comment on how people almost passed over his death until you got to Harry's reaction and then you had to go back and re-read it.

and

Did anyone else who did not think that Sirius would be the one to die before the book change their minds upon starting the book? I didn't really know who I thought would die but I was worried that it would be Lupin. However on starting the book I changed my mind. I don't know why but almost the moment Sirius turned up I knew he would be the one to die and I spent most of the book tensing up every time he turned up because I was so worried. When we got to the end and he wasn't there I was soooo relieved and then he turned up with Lupin and the others and I just felt like screaming at him to get back to his house.

HOLLYDAZE!!!
