It could be that there is something like a Secrecy Charm that is put on 
Hermione's parents or other relatives "in the know" which prevents 
slip-ups. As for squibs, since they are probably brought up in the 
wizarding world, it would have been drummed into them since childhood that 
there are things you don't talk about with muggles.
