TBC's thoughts on this:

I think this is a good question. Could that help explain the identical
Patil twins getting different houses, because they wanted to be seen
as less individuals?

I also was really hoping, after it's warning song, that the Hat would
intentionally sort against type, to build some bridges. If there were
Hufflepuffs who felt a tug toward Slytherin, would that have been a
basis for friendship? Or should the hat have done that a long time ago
(say, putting a 'true' Ravenclaw in Gryffindor)?
