Hmm, there are many things referred to as the hand.  Right hand man, et cetera.  How about something more literal yet?  Seems to me one often uses the possessive when referring to something created by someone.  For example, we all have Rowling's Potter books and yet they belong to us.  Well, there's a character that owes a debt to Harry Potter that has a hand created by Voldemort.  Perhaps Harry will die by that hand?  Or perhaps that was what the gleam was all about, that by using Harry's blood, Voldemort became part Harry and thus the hand is as much from Harry as it is from Voldemort and thus Voldemort will die by that hand.

And *that* would set up a pivotal last scene where Wormtail has to make a choice about which way to go and, after all, it is one's choices that make one what they are.
