Moody uses Dumbledore's Put-Outer. I wondered this briefly when
reading SS, and am wondering it again now: why a separate object to
perform a specific magical task? Why not just use a wand? They don't
have a separate object that replaces a flashlight, they just say
Lumos and the wand's tip gives off light.
Me:
I had always thought the the Put-Outer was a necessary tool because
it was not strictly a magical task. Electricity (and therefore
truning out the street lamps) may require some sort of bridging
between magic and muggle technology. Volia. The put-outer. The other
tasks you are talking about such as lumos and a lighted wand tip
actually replace the muggle technology, so no insturment besides the
wand is needed.
