Clearly he and Petunia are on a first name basis. The howler he
sends addresses her by first name. So, it is likely that Dumbledore
and Harry are related on his mother's side. Obviously, A.D.'s
involvement with Lilly and Petunia Evan's family goes beyond beyond
the role of headmaster. Petunia obviously knew him before the
prophecy 16 years earlier and before Harry's birth. Otherwise why
would she ever take in baby Harry based on the instructions in a
letter from a stranger. As far as she knew, he was involved in that
horrible world of Magic that she wanted nothing to do with. And,if
she knows Dumbledore than Petunia knows much more than she will admit
about the world of magic.
Too, the Potters were in the original OoP group and he cared so
deeply for them he wanted to be their secret keeper. It can't be
simple coincidence that he was that "close" to Lilly and Petunia and
loves Harry so much just because he is Hogwarts headmaster.
Plus, unless he was her grandfather or other close relative, why
would his wishes mean anything to Petunia. She would either have to
know him and trust him, or be afraid of his power in order to honor
his wishes regarding the baby. Petunia does not appear to be the type
to keep Harry just to keep him safe. She has never shown any remorse
for her sister, or love for Harry so there is something else causing
her to comply.
It is also clear Harry is "gifted" for his age (even though he has
had alot of help from friends)so perhaps he has inherited some talent
from an ancestor. Maybe from the only wizard Voldemort ever feared,
after all he is the only person to have bested V. four times. In OoP,
we see Dumbledore's role quickly move from that of mentor toward that
of a loving family figure. We know Harry must live to defeat
Voldemort, so Dumbledore may just be doing his job as leader of the
OoP. But he did NOT need to share the extent of or depth of his
feelings for Harry to do so. He chose to share his love with Harry.
We see a new relationship begin(just as he loses Sirius). As both
Dumbledore and Harry come from Griffyndor, we can suspect that Harry
is the heir of Griffyndor, or better yet the LAST heir of Gryffindor.
Now the howler has GREAT meaning, when Petunia receives it and
hears "Remember my last, Petunia" it could be referring to the "last
heir of Griffyndor" and not Dumbledore's last letter 15 yrs ago.
