This is an interesting consideration. On the one hand, I would not
have thought much of it had not Neville played a more prominant role
in OoP. But on the other hand, the very role he plays, and what is
said of him in the book, would IMO argue against it. However, the
concept of four friends and the 'odd man' scenario has interesting
possibilities.
In context of the battle at the end, it would almost seem that Ron
has more potential for this. Attacked by a brain, stumbling about
drunkenly? This only made sense to me from two possible
perspectives. Either, (1) JRK thought the scene might be too dark
and threw this in for comedic effect to lighten the sense of danger,
or (2) while Ron would be expected to be the one ever closest to
Harry, the overal development of the epic plot (EP) demanded that
Neville be placed in a more prominant light.
Incidentally, I've read speculation that Neville might be the real
one to defeat He Who Must Not Be Named as he alone, besides, Harry
could hold the prophecy. This doesn't hold up IMO as once Harry has
taken the prophecy anyone could get it from him (why else are all
those nasty DE's running about waving wands?) and thus Harry might
just have easily thrown it to Ron or Luna. I would submit that if in
the final two books it is emphasized that only Harry or Neville
could /hold/ the prophecy (although Dd and Trelawney also could,
obviously), that this may prove a Flint. The logic of the whole
section depends on interpreting it that only one directly involved
could "take" it.
But, this brings me to another question. Could not You Know Who take
it? Obviously, yes. Then why didn't he? There is comment that he
didn't want to risk be revealed to be alive, but this doesn't hold
water since he certainly does give everyone an eyeful in the end
anyway. Consider, he sends DE's to wait for Harry (et al) to arrive,
intending that they will get the prophecy from them, and then what?
Frame Harry for breaking into the MoM? You Know Who knows that Harry
has proven to be a formidable foe and so must have understood the
potential that there would at least be a dirty great mess before the
whole business was over. He could obviously apparate into the MoM so
why not just go get it?
