I've also been wary of Neville for this reason. JKR seems to be
setting up a pattern (4 friends, 1 of whom is a turncoat) but this
very pattern makes me more suspicious of JKR than of Neville.

There's been a lovely theory somewhere around (in the thread about
Lupin being ESE, perhaps?) that notes JKR tends to set up "twins" and
then knock one of them down. For this reason, I think it's possible
that she's setting *us* up to suspect Neville, who could not conjure
a Patronus (OotP, AmHC, p606), who could only poke someone in the eye
with his wand during the raid on the MoM (due to his broken nose), as
the weak-willed, jealous one who will betray the other three *because
that's what Pettigrew did.*

JKR prizes free will, however, and it's possible Neville will make
the other choice (loyalty, bravery) rather than be authorially
directed into being part of a pattern. I think part of this may be
that Hermy, Ron, and Harry know his deepest secret (saw his parents
at St. Mungo's), and they didn't hate him and kept his secret. That's
why we keep secrets: we're afraid of other people's reactions.
Neville's fear has been allayed.

I'm still shocked that Neville was using a hand-me-down wand.
