Watched the JKR webcast today with my daughter. There was a question 
about the Thestrals. She answered that after experiencing a death 
the person had to think about it -- let it sink in -- to see them. 
She was only addressing the issue of the end of GoF and not any 
reference to the death of Harry's parents, however.
