Another first time poster trying to get through hundreds of posts.  Sorry if this has been addressed already.

I didn't pick up on this initially.  Good catch!  I have an idea building on yours.  Is it possible Voldemort, or some high ranking DE, asked Regulus to hurt/kill Sirius, knowing he was the Potters' best friend and potentially their secret keeper?  Perhaps as horrid as Sirius thought Regulus was, he (Regulus) was unable to harm his brother.  I think there is definitely some kind of connection.  I can't imagine the time frame of his death is a coincidence.
