called out to Snape. Harry commented on Snape's speed and I think he
would have said something about James too if James had been even
faster. Another thing is that Snape only got his wand half raised, so
he had no chance of actually casting a spell on James. So, basically
I see what James did as pretty much the same as attacking from behind
because, if Snape was so fast, James would have had to start his
incantation right after he had called out, just as Snape had the
chance to register what James had said. It was just shorter and more
poignant to say "attack from behind"...

Phew, am I *puffed*. [sips coffee and breathes in deeply]
Ok, so, I have said we were glazed over the points in James favour.
This is one of them. He outdrew Snape.
"This'll liven you up, Padfoot," said James quietly. "Look who it
is...".
Sirius head turned. He became very still like a dog that scented a
rabbit.
"Excellent," he said.....
Harry turned... Snape was on his feet........,Sirius and James stood
up.
*No wands are drawn yet.
"Snape reacted so fast it was as though he'd _been expecting an
attack_ ...."
[read as a query? Why??? is he *expecting* an attack?
James and Sirius are not making one, and their wands are put away]
At this point since, Harry focussed his attention on Snape, he was
given no indication by James and Sirius that they were prepared for
an assault on Snape. In fact his observation does indicate that they
provoked Snape quite unprepared and, yet, James bested him with ease.

All the while he is looking over at Lily hoping she will notice him
putting himself in harms way and being entirely too quick for Snape.

James longed to be a hero in his princesses eyes.

Valky hoping that Jens is quite alright with just one more plug of
Honorable!Mistaken!DangerAddicted!James.
