       I have two variant thoughts on this. One is that the 'horrible boy' 
may have been Snape. If the Snape/Lily theory is true he may have tried to 
'warn' Lily, much like some people theorize that Draco tries to 'warn' Hermione. 
The other...well, how about a Petunia/James ship? Petunia meets James, develops 
a crush, then, once again, Lily wins. That would add to her apparent jealousy 
of Lily.
