All this was quite true *but* how was Severus to know his old boss
was behind Quirrell's behavior? Certainly Q didn't tell him. And if
Snape doesn't *know* the Dark Lord wants the Stone why shouldn't he
try to curry favor with Dumbledore by doing his best to protect it
from that little upstart Quirrel? (This of course would be how Snape
would explain his behavior to LV).
Also, I'd love to know who LV was talking

My personal feeling is he's talking about Snape at that point but
Severus, perhaps with Lucius Malfoy's help, managed to convince LV
he'd remained true to him in his heart. The marked favor Snape as a
teacher has shown to Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and other DE offspring
could be cited as suppporting evidence. In fact it is quite possible
that Snape's favoritism is necessary cover and winked at by
Dumbledore for that reason.
