The Grey Wolf puts on his "FAQ" badge and says:
Hello, flurykick, welcome to the list. As you imagined, the question
*has* come up before. It was quite some time back (and a great deal of
posts), so chances of finding something through yahoomort are close to
nil. So let me give you a run down of what I remember to be the most
popular theories:

· The generic DE: Voldemort didn't go alone to the Potters house - some
DE went along to observe and hold his master's cape or something, and
when everything went to pot he had the presence of mind to rescue the
wand and keep it. Voldemort/Peter would've asked it back at the time of
the Berta Jorkins interrogatory/torture. A top contender for this DE is
Malfoy, due to his collecting habits. I find this theory unlikely,
myself.

· Peter: As above, but Peter was there because he had to reveal the
Secret Keeper. Keeps back beacuse he's a coward and cannot face the
people he just sold to Voldemort. When everything goes wrong, he comes
up with the "simulated death" plan, which requires him to leave his
wand behind, so he takes Voldemort's wand with him to have a spare one.
Peter would've kept the wand hidden (in his underwear, for example) for
13 years until he finds Voldemort. Cons: recent canon (SPOILER ALERT
--> skip to next point) tells us that Peter's presence probably wasn't
necessary, he only had to write the place in a parchment, so he had no
reason to be there (particularly if he felt guilty and prefered not to
be involved further).

· Hagrid: He is the first to arrive to the crime scene, canonically. He
looks in the rubble for Harry. He is not allowed his own wand, and his
old one has been snapped in two - and yet he enjoys using magic as much
as the next guy. Voldemort was close enough to the baby that his wand
must have been close by (and since the house exploded outwards, Harry
and the wand were probably more or less in the centre of the
devastation, lying in the open). According to this theory, Hagrid picks
up that wand (can't let it to go to waste, a perfectly good wand), and
hides it in his cabin for the next years - maybe inside his umbrella
(many have pointed out that a broken wand cannot possibly work as well
as that umbrella does). Peter spends several months in Hagrid's hut,
hidding from Black, so he has ample time to find it and hide it. From
then on, it proceeds as above -> Peter hides it until he finds
Voldemort.

Hope that helps,

Grey Wolf, who advices that there might be more theories he has
forgotten about.
