So, we've been wondering if and in what form Sirius will show up again. What
if the invisible occupant is teenage Sirius? Lurking just out of sight?
JKR wouldn't bother to mention the empty picture at least 4 times (once the
occupant is seemingly asleep, p.92) if it wasn't important, would she?
Any thoughts?

Someone has probably already answered this, since I'm just now getting up,
but I think the 'empty' picture was actaully Phineus NIgellus--the former
Slytherin Headmaster (and Sirius's Great-great-great whatever). I think it's
even stated in the books later (or is it that Harry puts two-and-two
together when DD sends Nigellus to go check on Sirius at one point? I can't
remember).

That...and why would Sirius be 'sniggering' at Harry? Even at that age?
After all, Harry is the son of his best friend James....he'd see the family
resemblance if nothing else, and I suspect that would undermine any desire
on the part of Sirius to want to make fun of Harry...

By the same token, there just might be a painting of Sirius somewhere in
that house that may be of use. Knowing the Black Matriarch and Kreacher,
though, it's probably uncerimoniously stuffed in some dingy, hard to get to
and forgotten corner, so it will take some doing to find it....
