Geoff, it may help to know the context of the "bangs" reference in the
U.S. edition of PoA (Scholastic ed. p. 39). It's on the page after the
Daily Prophet article on Sirius Black in "The Knight Bus" and is part
of a dialogue sequence between Harry and Stan Shunpike:
"Yeah," said Stan, still rubbing his chest. "Yeah, that's right. Very
close to You-Know-'Oo, they say. Anyway, when little 'Arry Potter got
the better of You-Know-'Oo--"
Harry nervously flattened down his bangs again.
"--all You-Know-Oo's supporters was tracked down, wasn't they, Ern? .
. . ."
