Potioncat: who apologizes but she couldn't figure out how to snip
this one.
Well, one detail at a time. How could an 11 year old change his
name from P.Evans. to S.Snape. and wouldn't the few remaining
pureblood families notice? If he wasn't pureblood, the name change
wouldn't hide it. So I don't agree with that motivation.
It could be possible that his mother changed his name to hide him
from his father or grandfather. (Check out the original Perseus's
childhood. The original Perseus may have a great-grandfather named
Alba.)
I can't find any quotes from JKR about this anagram. And IIRC, no
one on this list has read a quote about it. (Maybe no one has asked
her?)
I do think it is intriguing that Snape might be an Evans and that
there is another Evans in the wings. But I think the theory listed
from Mugglenet is long on speculation and short on canon.
