It may indeed be exaggeration, but as you say, if Grawp IS a 
full-sized giant (if a runt), maybe not. And don't forget, Hagrid 
handles the giant horses in GOF easily enough and has a photo 
of himself as a young child with his normal-sized dad on his 
shoulder. 

Which brings me to another thought - why on earth would he 
have asked Madame Maxime which of her parents was a giant? 
It HAD to be the mother. Think about it. If you've read Larry 
Niven's "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" you'll know what I 
mean. :-)
