AmanitaMuscaria here: I think this goes with the POV of Harry - 
Hagrid's size, the number of students in Hogwarts, etc. Harry hasn't 
had even a normal range of experience, so to put him into a fantasy 
world would be much more like putting a Victorian child there. He's 
not been influenced by TV, films, computer games - magic is MAGIC to 
him.
My guess about Hagrid is that he also is limited in his experience. I 
don't think he would have thought of the physical implications of his 
question.
