When Harry went in to buy his first wand Ollivander took all kinds of
measurements -- the length of his arms, his height, and even the 
distance between his nostrils if I remember right.  Obviously those
numbers are going to change as the person ages.  Maybe you can
outgrow a wand in much the same way you outgrow an old pair of 
jeans (only nowhere near as frequently!).
