I think using that particular spell you can repair anything that
doesn't require the creation of NEW material. Example; the broken
window on the train compartment door. Hermione repaired it right away,
that means all that glass shards were there ready to be put back into
place. But, if she had left it and come back a month later to try and
repair it, it's doubtful that all the glass would have been there. It
would have gotten kicked around, track out of the train stuck to the
bottom of people's shoes, and lost for assorted other reasons. Since,
under that delayed circumstance, all the pieces of the window pane no
longer exist at that location, they couldn't be repair.
Another example, if a piece of cloth tears, you can probably use that
spell to repair it, but if you wear a hole in the cloth over time,
that spell will not work because the material to fill the hole no
longer exists. I suspect a wizard tailor could mend that cloth using a
different spell, like a darning spell, but not Reparo.
In the case of Harry's glasses, they were snapped at the bridge, not
shattered as shown in the movie, so that would have been an easy
repair to make.
In that case of Sirius's mirror which Harry broke, let's remember it
was broken inside his trunk which implies that all the pieces are
contain therein. As long as he doesn't lose pieces when he unpacks, he
can repair it.
However, I wonder if he will repair it, and have Hermione figure out
how to make more, or if he will give Ron and Hermione a broken
fragment of the mirror that they can use for communication?
I'm very confident that the trio will use that mirror in some way in
the next book, I just haven't worked out all the details of how.
Just a few thoughts.
