Yet he doesn't know Lupin is a werewolf, which they are also 
discussing, since it was curiousity about where Lupin went every 
month that allowed Sirius to play the Prank on him later. It seems to 
me that he probably could hear MWPP talking but was paying no 
attention because he was thinking about his paper, but the pensieve 
plays everything back not just the bits he noticed. If that were true 
he might not know their nicknames.

Just a theory.
