I posted something similar a while ago... "The eyes are the widow of 
the soul."  Since it IS stated that Harry has Lily's eyes, I was 
thinking that maybe a bit of her soul (part of the ancient magic) 
transfered into Harry, saving him.  Since the eyes are the window of 
the soul, Harry retains a little of his mother's soul which is shown 
through his eyes.

I do like your theory, though.
