Lilian:

I need to read OotP at least three times more before even trying to
start answering questions like these on the top off my head, but hey,
what's life without adventure (said she from behind the computer :-)

After he had verified that Sirius was safe, would Snape not have
tried to convey this information to Harry? First place to look:
Umbridge's office. There he would have learned from the inquisitorial
squad that Umbridge went into the forest with Harry and Hermione.

DD said later that Snape 'conducted' a search, so I presume that he
did it on his own. Still, the forest is not small so trying to track
them down will take quite some time. -on a side note: how fast do
thestrals fly?-
I'm quite sure Snape would not have bothered with Umbridge, had he
found her, but OTOH if he did he would also have encountered the
centaurs. I don't think they would let Snape go, being an adult human
and all.

Lilian:

Erm ... don't mean to offend, but ... aren't you mixing things up a
bit? Quirrell and the Chamber?

Anyway, in PS/SS Snape did try to keep a close watch on the trio, but
they went of in the dead of night, from their dormitory, covered by
the invisibility cloak. If Snape was anywhere around, patrolling, he
would have assumed that the trio was in their beds as well as
Quirrell. Snape has no legitimate right to enter Gryffindor tower,
nor Quirrell's private quarters.
But then again, he may have tried to alert DD, who later said
(paraphrasing from memory): 'When I arrived at the MoM, I found that
I should be at Hogwarts'. Urgent message waiting for him?
