I don't think that Sirius was always Mr. Cool, and along
those very same lines I refuse to believe that Snape is Mr.
Innocent. Perhaps, Sirius witnessed Snape do something that killed
him as a child. Perhaps, he even did it to Sirius. I mean we know
that at Hogwarts he became cocky but I refuse to believe that this

attitude was simply a thirst to prove himself. James became a part
of that after he became close to Sirius. I think your on to
something here Meri.

Potioncat:
JKR has said she won't do a prequel, because the back story will be
covered in books 6 and 7. But I'm not sure she fully understands how
much our inquiring minds want to know!

I noticed right away that Melanie and I are imagining very different
back stories, and in this case speculation could very quickly become
fan fiction.

What I've wondered, if either of the versions we've been given (that
is Snape's and Serius') is really accurate. I have a suspicion that
Serius would have been well versed in Dark Arts as well. Did he cover
up his knowledge and draw attention to Snape's? Uh oh, here comes
fan fiction.....
