I enjoy reading the conspiracy theories as well.  I do think however, 
that JKR won't make someone that is close to Harry ESE.  I do think 
that there is something going on with Lupin (aside from being a 
werewolf) that he is hiding. Is he feeling guilty about something?  
Was he forced into doing something terrible as a youth? (What is the 
curse that makes you do things against your will?) 

I also don't like the way Lupin reacts during the penseive scene. It 
seems obvious that he doesn't like what the Potter gang are doing to 
Snape, yet he does nothing to stop it (I realize that he was a child 
in this scene). 

I also think that it's likely that Lupin was secretly in love with 
Lily. Perhaps his feelings of guilt are wrapped around this issue.
