Carolyn:
It was Newton Scamandar's mother (FB&WTFT, p.vi). She may or may not
be dead (as he was born in 1897 - but wizards/witches live a long
time). Anyway, she may have passed on the interest to her son, who
was certainly as keen as Hagrid on peculiar beasts. He is still
alive, living in Dorset with his wife and pet kneazles. Of the right
age to be considered anyway.
Interestingly, he worked for the MoM and was responsible for the Ban
on Experimental Breeding in 1965; a law which appears to be widely
flouted. He may well know Bode and Croaker. Why would he want to kill
Bode ? Dunno !
