I don't think the students /do/ think that.  It's a common turn of phrase.  
When I visit a friend at their offices for the first time, I will ask "Where do 
you live?'"  or when in an unfamiliar kitchen will say "Where does the 
mustard live?"
  It's certainly made clear in PoA that Snape does not live in his office.
