Snape/motive/recognition

Sorry, I don't remember who said that Snape half-wants, half-dreads 
recognition, but I remarked something:

When he does something he thinks it's great, but in other eyes it's 
just for revenge or normal, like give Sirius and Remus to the 
dementors, or participate in the protection of Harry in POA (every 
ones did it), he doesn't miss a chance to boast.

When he does something really great, like saving Harry in the first 
year, where he reacted rapidly (and we didn't see what the others 
professor did) and kept an eye on him all the year (whatever his 
motivation), he says nothing!


Why did he prefer say "I saved you from a dangerous man and a 
werewolf" when he know that Harry would never listen him or never see 
the things like that instead of "You didn't die in your first match 
thanks to me", when it's true and where Harry or something else 
couldn't deny it?
