An interesting hypothesis. I have often wondered just how "word got
out" as well and this would explain it. The only problem I have with
the Godric's Hollow event is, although we do not really get any
insight from the book, in the film9PS/SS), there was someone standing
just behind Voldemort as he curses Lily. I know usually the scripts
are not considered canon, however, JKR did have a say-so in the
filming of this scene and I do not believe there is anything in the
scene that would not support canon. I think the scene, as it appears
in PS/SS movie does provide clue. I just wish I could figure them
out. Voldemort is shown approaching the house alone, but then when
in the room with Lily, as he is cursing her, there is someone
standing just behind his right shoulder. Then I think of Lupin's
remark in PoA. He said "you heard James?" (paraphrasing) to Harry
during the patronus lesson. Why? He didn't question Harry's hearing
Lily's scream. Does he know something about James yet to be told?

Lynnette, who thinks Snape IS a good guy, even if he is NOT a nice
guy!
