Lynette:
<huge snips>
Then I think of Lupin's remark in PoA. He said "you heard James?"
(paraphrasing) to Harry during the patronus lesson. Why? He didn't
question Harry's hearing Lily's scream. Does he know something about
James yet to be told?

Carol:
I think this remark is one of our first clues that Lupin was a good
friend of James's, a fact he's been concealing from Harry and now has
to partially admit. It's a first step toward the revelation that he's
one of the makers of the Marauder's Map and a one-time friend of the
supposed murderer Sirius Black as well, not to mention his own status
as werewolf and his role in the other three friends becoming illegal
animagi. (Snape calling him into his office to ask about the supposed
dark magic in the piece of parchment is, IIRC, the next hint.)

As for why Lupin doesn't react the same way to hearing about Lily's
screams as to hearing about James's voice, he's seen Harry faint and
has known he heard Lily screaming from almost the first time Harry
encounters a Dementor, so knowing that he heard her words isn't that
much of a shock to Lupin. Also he was closer, much closer, to James
than to Lily for seven years of his life. So he forgets for a moment
just how much he's hiding from Harry and the words "You heard James?"
just slip out. That slip, IMO, makes the eventual revelation of all
his other secrets inevitable.
