Del :

1. Why does anyone have a crush on anyone else ? Not always easy to
say.

2. Plain looking : have you ever heard that beauty is in the eye of
the beholder ? (I hope I got that right, English is not my first
language). What seems plain to you might be beautiful to someone
else. I'm always amazed at what kind of women my husband finds
beautiful : *not* the ones you would expect !

3. Bookish and bossy : you could also translate this as "smart and
confident", 2 things that Ron doesn't think he is and wishes he
were. He's always felt trampled by his 5 big brothers, he doesn't
think he can be exceptional, he doesn't even think he measures up to
them or to Harry. Hermione is overly self-confident, and everyone
agrees that she's one of the smartest students in the whole school.
She's bound to impress him.

4. She's a *girl* and one of his 2 best friends, and I suppose Ron
might have a problem reconciling those 2 facts. It might sound
stupid and old-fashioned, but many kids still think that when a boy
and a girl get emotionally close, that means they will get
romantically involved.

5. She's talking to him like he's normal. How many other girls do
that ?

Etc, etc... Many reasons for him to develop a crush on her.
