I agree that Voldemore seems too outlandish, what with his alabastor
skin and scarlet eyes and whirling cape, to be much more than a front
for the *real* bad guy. It really seems like someone is using LV as a
straw man.
There was a thread posted a couple months ago (If LV is the monkey,
who is grinding the organ?) that had a couple good possibilities in
it. It began on #85382. Here's a quick recap and some more terrible
thoughts to chew on before JKR finishes Book 6. (I can't *believe*
she's still writing the first draft, as she alluded to in her World
Book Day chat. As Madelaine L'Engle said when she gave writing
advice: "Don't think! Write!" Geez! It's been 14 mos since she turned
in OOTP! Surely the first draft should be done.)
Dumbledore: He created Tom Riddle, and he created Harry, in a new
interp of *Frankenstein*. DD gave Harry to the Dursleys in the
beginning of SS/PS, knowing that he would be abused (see DD's
comments in SS/PS when he's sitting outside with McGonagall, and that
whole list of adverbs about Petunia's reaction in OOTP, "furiously,
bitterly, etc., to describe how she took HP in), to attempt to
recapitulate Tom Riddle's upbringing in a *Boys from Brazil* kinda
way. DD gives Harry just enough information so that he screws up and
LV returns to his full powers. The "glimmer of triumph" at the end of
GoF was too scary. The Bumblebee also stings!
Fudge: The fumbling is a cover.
Hermione: With a really big time-turner and some gender bending, who
would suspect our sweet little Hermy is the baddest one of all?
Harry Himself: Ditto with the time-turner. I've considered before
that the deep emotional and physical abuse (including being locked in
a closet, repeated beatings, denigration, and starvation) that Harry
suffers at the Dursleys' could lead to sociopathic behavior and
multiple personality disorder. Harry's Evil Side incarnates itself as
LV. This makes the books a parable for Original Sin. Also explains
the twin wands thing.
Malfoy: Wants to destroy the MoM and set himself up as Wizard
Emporer, but wants total deniability in case it doesn't work, so he
uses a straw man.
Lupin: Everyone hates the werewolf, so Remus gives them something to
hate. This is the wolf that didn't bark in the night.
In general, though, I agree that LV has been piddling around too long
with getting himself corporal again, and hasn't spent nearly enough
time killing people and destroying property. How are we supposed to
respect a guy who wants to take over the world unless he tries to do
it?
