Earendil:
I suppose Dumbledore's decision could be explained by the protection
we learned Harry could have at Privet Drive, a protection he could
have had nowhere else, not with Sirius or with Dumbledore himself.
JoAnna:
I think it's fairly obvious why Dumbledore sent Hagrid to deliver
Harry to the Dursleys.
As far as Dumbledore knew, Sirius Black was the Potter's Secret-
Keeper. The moment he heard that the Potters had been killed and
the house destroyed, DD's first thought was, "Sirius Black is the
spy; he betrayed the Potters to Voldemort." Obviously, he wasn't
going to let Sirius Black act as Harry's godfather and guardian if
Sirius was in league with Voldemort, no matter what James & Lily had
wanted. So he put Harry in the Dursley's care instead.
