Maybe the favoritism isn't reflected in the students' final marks.
We'd have parents complaining if they thought their children didn't
get the marks they deserve. Instead, we hear *Draco* complaining that
*Hermione* is the teacher's favorite because she gets better marks
than he does. Remember, too, that he didn't show anyone the grade he
received on the Potions essay that Snape marked to OWL standards and
that Hermione didn't complain about her mark. She got the message that
they needed to study harder.
IMO, Snape's favoritism involves his treatment of particular students,
a few unfair advantages for the Slytherin Quidditch team, and the
*appearance* of giving unfair marks (grades). But I don't think he
could get away with giving the students end-of-term grades other than
those the students deserve. If that were the case, Harry and Neville
would still be in first-year Potions.
