Ceridwen:
'At the hand of' could also imply 'beside'.  I'm in a silly mood 
tonight.  So I just had a mental image:  Harry and Voldemort are 
dueling.  Snape shows up for one reason or another.  Harry hates 
Snape.  Voldemort doesn't trust him and decides he wants him dead.  
Harry and LV stop duelling and turn on Snape.  Snape kills one or the 
other of them, 'at the hand of (beside) the other'.
