Leah:

Unless Sirius carried the wizarding equivalent of a cyanide capsule 
with him, he could not guarantee that he would die before revealing 
the secret.  If he was subjected to Crucio by a man who was also an 
accomplished Leglimens, he could well have revealed the secret 
without even speaking.   I understood the reason that Peter was 
chosen was precisely because of his weakness and insignificance- 
that Voldemort would never dream of going after him, so the question 
of his breaking under torture would never arise.  What is not 
explained is why James and Lily refused the offer of Secret Keeping 
from 'the only one Voldemort ever feared'.
