I've been reading this thread with interest, but little time to post.
Having grown up in a largely medical family, I have to comment on this
aspect of the Snape-as-healer discussion.

Where did anyone ever get the idea that the medical profession is one
that "needs compassion to heal the sick?" Sure, your family practice
doctor needs a good bedside manner, and it certainly *helps* if other
doctors show compassion in such a way the patients are aware of it.
But I've had *plenty* of doctors and nurses who came across as brisk
and somewhat unfeeling. Sorry, but even in the real world, compassion
is *not* necessary to heal the sick.

And further, compassion should not be mistaken as only found in the
gentle, kind demeanor. Many people act out of compassion even if
their demeanor doesn't reveal even a hint of it.

Back to Snape -- who certainly does heal, with or without compassion.
He saves lives when character's bodies are afflicted with problems
that will otherwise kill them.
